Well, that hasn't changed so much, but I've changed my perspective.

Happy 20th anniversary, Freddy vs Jason!

Been awhile since I celebrated this.

The 20th seems about right to give it a bump.

My review 20 years out?

Still like it.

The super-saturated color makes it like a comic, and it actually kind of blends with the aesthetic of the 00's pre-MCU Marvel movies. 

Right down to the cheesy 00's metal soundtrack. 

Daredevil, Punisher, Ghost Rider, FvJ, they're all of a weird little time capsule sub-genre.

FvJ is as much an 00's time capsule as the other Freddys are an 80's time capsule.

Oh, the WAY I enjoy it has changed.

I appreciate it with a lemon bite of irony and humor, and some big thick nostalgia goggles, where as a 20-something I un-ironically thought it was in the pantheon of cinematic greatness.

But yeah, I'll definitely go to my grave having a pet-like affection for this weird little movie.

Lessee, what happened in the Freddy/Jason franchises since the 14th anniversary?

Scream Queen came out.

Even though it's doesn't connect to FvJ, it connects to "Never Sleep Again" which covers FvJ.

Um, yeah, that's it.

Freddy & Jason have been frozen in a block of ice since their respective flopped reboots.

I don't know why.

Sony didn't fuck around with Spider-Man, they kept trying.

I dunno what New Line/Warners is waiting for to revive these characters.

The hunger for 80's nostalgia horror is there.

Stranger Things, American Horror Story:1984, The Final Girls, The Blackening.

The Chucky series, for Chrissakes!

Maybe they think if they use actual Freddy & Jason, it won't be nostalgic, and ironic, and hip?

Freddy has always been about meta, and self-parody, and dark humor.

The layering of self awareness had started kicking in by the third and fourth entries in the series.

It was on overload in six.

Friday/Jason was goofing in itself by part 4, but really went all out in 10.

And I repeat, the Chucky series, fer Chrissakes!!

Oh, yeah, Robert Englund played Freddy one last time in a dream sequence in an episode of "The Goldbergs".

Well, New Line??!!?!?

WELL?!?!!?

Didn't Adam Goldberg having to pay a fee for Freddy to cross into ABC/Disney territory indicate some fucking interest?!!?

No!?!?

So frustrating.

Well, I've got the existing flicks, including this one, and my memories.

Just woulda liked a Freddy 8, or Jason 13 before I croak.

Especially with superhero media granting all our nostalgia wishes with "No Way Home" "Multiverse Of Madness" Deadpool 3, "Crisis On Infinite Earths" "The Flash" etc, etc.

They get it!!

And I double repeat, the Chucky series, fer Chrissakes!!

I ordered it last week, and got it yesterday.
Hectic day what with having to go vote, and all that.
Anyway, now, review time!

Scream, Queen: 
My Nightmare on Elm  Street (2020)

Was it worth the wait?
Overall, yes.

Was it good?
Yes.

I'm not doing cartwheels over it, but that's my fault.

See, I think you'd get way more enjoyment out of this the less you know.
I know too much.

I'm the kinda guy who latches on to a project I'm excited about, and every year it's like "when's it coming? When's it coming?", and I find every article, interview, podcast, etc about it trying to glean details.

Well, by following it that obsessively, I kinda spoiled it.
There was very little in the documentary I didn't already know from interviews with Mark Patton along the way.

From my perspective, the documentary was a squished down version of the last ten years of them trying to get the documentary made.
Like a documentary of the making of itself.

But, if you didn't follow everything, if you only saw Nightmare 2 when you were a kid in the 80's, or you only just recently saw Nightmare 2 because of the internet chatter about it, OR best of all, if you've never seen it, and your first time is to brush up before this, you're in for a treat.

I enjoyed it more on the second viewing once I had that perspective on it.

Yep, watched it twice.
After the first time, I went back to "Never Sleep Again", and watched just the Nightmare 2 parts, including the commentary.
That refreshed my memory, and got me even more in the Freddy Krueger mood and vibe, and that also helped enhance the second viewing.

So, what's it about?
Well, if you haven't been following along, it's about Mark Patton, star of "A Nightmare On Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge", and how 80's Hollywood homophobia and AIDS phobia drove him out of showbiz.
And how the gay subtexts in "Freddy's Revenge", were a huge factor in him almost getting outed, and having to flee.

It's only 99 minutes, but they manage to cram it all in there.
Mark's life story up to and after the film, how casual and pervasive homophobia was in our culture in the 80's, how the Reagan-right exploited AIDS to fear-monger, how the "Never Sleep Again", guys found Mark in hiding, his convention experiences since then, how he's become a sort of gay mentor figure in the horror community, the whole deal.

No bonus features.
None.
Zero.
Zilch.
Not even a menu.
You just the get the doc.
But, I guess the doc says it all.

My only real gripe I guess, is how long it took to get to my collection.

Rating it against the other two Freddy documentaries...
Definitely better than "I Am Nancy".
But, "I am Nancy", is light and breezy, and "Scream, Queen", is heavy.
But, even taking that into account, it's just produced so much better.
The editing is superb.
Whatever they don't get to verbally discuss is crammed in there visually somehow, so you get it all.
And there's so much crammed in there.
Very well done.

Versus "Never Sleep Again"?
Nothing beats "Never Sleep Again".
That's just unbeatable.

But, it's up there.
A close second.

Yeah,  "Never Sleep Again", "Scream, Queen", and "I Am Nancy", in that order.

I need to have a marathon of all three.
I said at the time "Never Sleep Again", was new, the only problem with it is is makes you want even more!
Maybe with "I Am Nancy", "Scream, Queen", and "Slash Of The Titans", it'll finally be enough.
We'll see...

NOW! Let's see if Robert Englund can ever get "Nightmares In The Makeup Chair", finished!!

Huh, some sites say it came out in 2018, but I can't find it to buy anywhere, even on streaming.
If it's out, where the fuck is it?

It's "Moleman Of Belmont Avenue", all over again.
Here we go again...

Anyway, the journey is finally over for this one, and I'm a happy and lucky sumbitch.
It's an embarrassment of riches for Nightmare fans.

The only thing that could be better is Robert Englund drinking a youth potion, and doing Nightmare Part 9.
But, that's probably not gonna happen, so I'll have to make do with docs and books.

I was burnt out and bummed out about the franchise, but I'm good to go for more stuff now!

Movies I was waiting for #4 (MM #124)

Yep, I'm bringing this series back for one last go-round.

To refresh reader's memories, this is where I look back at the franchises I was waiting for sequels to back in the 90's when the internet was new, and catching it up to where those franchises are now.
So, here we go...


Star Wars-

Solo came out, Mandalorian is on its way on Disney+, The Rise Of Skywalker is on its way, and is gonna close out the Skywalker Saga.

Oh, and The Phantom Menace turned 20.

So, no matter where Star Wars goes after TROS, my 90's self's SW dreams have already come true.
I can finally close this chapter for him.


Freddy/Jason-

Scream Queen is finally done!!!

But it's going to tour the festival circuits for goodness knows how long before a disk release.
But, it exists, so now we wait.

Nostalgia and commentary is all this franchise puts out anymore.
But I'll take it.

They're never gonna bring back Robert Englund, and further reboots will just keep missing the point.
Nightmare was a thing of the 80's.
In theory, they could period-piece it like "Stranger Things", but...New Line can't be trusted anymore.
Not without Bob Shaye.

And Jason?
Fuck Jason.


Superman 5-

As mentioned in previous entries, "Superman Returns", ended up being Superman 5.
But, then I continued it on with the DCEU.

Well, were getting a REAL Superman 6, because Brandon Routh is coming back as Superman for CW's "Crisis On Infinite Earths".
(See here, here, here, and here)

Kevin Smith (writer of "Superman Lives") got to direct an episode of Supergirl titled "Supergirl Lives", and there was a Thanagarian snare beast (giant spider) joke in there.
Yeah, that was quite awhile ago now, but it still needs mentioning.
Plus, Supergirl is part of "Crisis", so that all ties in.

John Schnepp (director of "The Death Of Superman Lives, What Happened?") died!! :-(

Nicolas Cage voiced Superman in "Teen Titans Go To The Movies".
And Spider-Man-Noir in "Into The Spider-Verse".

DC Animated remade "The Death Of Superman", again.
Followed by "Reign Of The Supermen".
Eh, they were all right.

Doomsday is on "Krypton".

There's no DCEU Superman sequel in sight though.
The DCEU Superman made a (headless) cameo in "Shazam", that's about it.

Current state of the DCEU-

-Aquaman made over 1 billion.
-There's Oscar talk for "Joker!".


Batman 5-

Batfleck's out, Bat-Inson is in.
And we're getting our first Batman standalone since "The Dark Knight Rises", in fucking 2012.


Evil Dead-

The show wrapped up after 3 seasons. 
Bruce Campbell retired from Ash.
Now talk of an Evil Dead 4 after all!

No matter what happens, the show was ED 4-12 for me.
I'm all set.


Ghostbusters-

GHOSTBUSTERS 3!!!!!!!!!!
2020!!!


Star Trek-

Discovery season 3 is on its way.
Star Trek: Picard is series 7.
Star Trek: Lower Decks is series 8.
Pine And Hemsworth bailed on JJ-Trek 4, and it fell apart as a result.
Possible Tarantino involvement with the fourth movie, whatever it incarnates as.

Fuck the movies, TV is where it's at for Trek.
"Unidiscovered Country", and "Generations", wrapped up TOS.
"Picard", will wrap up the TNG/DS9/Voy-verse.
"Discovery", is a fresh new chapter.
90's me is satisfied.


Godzilla/Rampage-

Seen Rampage. Meh.
It's cute, it represents the game well.
Not on my top 5 of the year or nothin' though.
"Godzilla: King Of The Monsters", came out.
It flopped!

The alternate ending of "Little Shop Of Horrors", is my Rampage movie.
I'm done with 'Zilla.


Troma-

Still no word on video release of "Nuke Em high 2".
They're gonna do "Shakespeare's shitstorm", a remake of "The Tempest", before finally doing Toxie 5. If they ever do Toxie 5.
Word on the Toxie 1 remake has stalled.
Legendary just bought the rights, haven't heard jack shit since.
Not holding my breath for Troma anymore.
As I said in a previous entry, I've got the classics on DVD.
I'm all set there.


Spider-Man-

I retro-added this via James Cameron's Spider-Man in the 90's.

Since then "Avengers: Endgame", and "Spider-Man: Far From Home", have come out.
And I collected the reviews of the whole Infinity Saga.
And I'm one Blu-Ray (Far From Home) shy of having the whole Infinity Saga.
And, it looks like the Sony/Marvel deal will probably get renewed.
Spidey is in good shape.


And finally, I waited for all the 90's versions of these sequels via "Ain't It Cool News", and Harry Knowles ended up on the pervert pile.
That's the end of that asshole
But, I've still got good old reliable Dark Horizons.
And Collider, and Comic Book Movie, and a jillion other better sites.


And, that's the end.

I've updated these like crazy, but haven't kept up on it here for 2 years!
Um...Ghostbusters wall has changed a couple times.
The "big grid", wall has been shuffled all around.
Marvel movies have almost completely taken over.
(Updated up to Black Panther and Infinity War)
There's seasons 1-2 of Stranger things in there though.
There's a grid of the casts of all 6 Star Trek shows.

The Jade-Shade wall is taken down, and the posts are deleted.
Eh...yeah, that's about it.
Anyhoo, I'm not gonna keep up on these.
They served their purpose.
But, I'll have them here as reruns.
