Birthday loot 2023.

Got these first two Thursday, (7/28/23)

Happy 48th birthday to myself!

Previous years.

-47th (Didn't celebrate*, so only did loot, so there's that part 1, 2, 3)

Added a birthday tag, so future ones won't need a link back.

*As for not celebrating...I dunno...I think Nichelle Nichols dying re-activated my Margaret grief, so I was probably drowning my sorrows in prezzies, and I absent-mindedly forgot the actual birthday part.
Yeah, that seems like me.
Probably what I did.

By way of needing inspiration, let's see what 39 year old me was saying...

Last year, I navel gazed about how I no longer give a shit about society's opinion.
Now, I don't even give a shit that I don't give a shit.

There's no longer a speck of me left that's on the defensive, and I feel even pluckier about not taking anyone's shit.

Good advice.
May need it this year.

And that year was also the year I quested for all those lost movies and comics.
Thanks, past-me.
Future-you needed the pick-me-up.

I knew storing those acorns would be handy.

Why not 38th to be an even 10 years?
Because my finger missed, and 39th was better anyway. 😜

Oh, and here will be the placeholder for the loot reviews.

Stay tuned.

RIP Paul Reubens

(Sent back in time from my future-self in August, cuz of all the analysis-paralysis bullshit I mentioned in the Alan Arkin one; plus, the Sinead O'Connor death was still fresh; plus it was my birthday, and a lot of shit was going on)

I think I've said it all before...

From here.

Pee Wee's Big Adventure

A celebration of pure joyous weirdness.
My people needed this movie in a big way.
Came just in time.

Course, it just makes me think...Cyndi Lauper was doing her thing, Pee-Wee was on the rise, Goonies had its message of being a proud misfit, Weird Al was huge...I was under the illusion this cultural atmosphere would last.
...nope...dark times were ahead...
*Sighs*
But, in this little window of time, I was truly happy, and in my full power.
Confident, secure, excited about life, active, social, things were really great.
And then....

I think I went on to trail off into moaning and groaning about how the 90's sucked in comparison.
With a big water truckload of hindsight, on a lot of levels, my teenhood was dogshit, but I still lived through some amazing pop culture and history regardless.
I just missed the wacky weirdo stuff of my childhood.
But, I'm finding out in the write-ups for Paul's death, a lot of us feel that way.

On that note!

And from comments in my birthday post...

I miss him already.
I wish some cable network somewhere would syndicate Pee-Wee's Playhouse.

His second and third Pee-Wee movies are ass, but "Big Adventure" is still a masterpiece.
He saved Tim Burton's career from the garbage bin, you know!
The first iteration of "Frankenweenie" bombed so hard, Burton was on the way out, but Reubens demanded him for "Big Adventure" and it was a hit, and the rest is history for Burton.
I mean, yeah, Burton is like a used up boxer now, but we got his good ones.
"Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" "Edwards Scissorhands" "Beetlejuice" "Batman" "Batman Returns".
"Ed Wood". I've always liked "Mars Attacks". I'm part of that small cult.
I see it as an unintentional parody of "Independence Day" that stands the test of time better than "Independence Day".
We have Pee-Wee to thank for all of those.
Without his intervention, Tim Burton ends up in a dumpster with a banana peel on his head.

Also, he was Penguin's dad in both "Batman Returns" and "Gotham".
And! He was Terry's dad in "Reno 911!: Miami".
That character was even weirder than Pee-Wee!

His last words were...

“Please accept my apology for not going public with what I’ve been facing the last six years. I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”

Thank you for the art, Paul.
It was a pleasure.
You will be deeply missed.

RIP Sinead O'Connor

(Sent back in time from my future-self in August, cuz of all the analysis-paralysis bullshit I mentioned in the Alan Arkin one)

From my Facebook at the time....

Shit. I liked her. No cause of death. A lot of people couldn't handle her...neuro-divergence.
I have loopier relatives, and I've got my issues, so nothing she did really bothered me.
I'd take hanging out with her over someone like Marjorie Taylor fucking Greene any fucking day.

The people who were outraged by her, and thought she was a bad person, are the kind of people that derive thumb sucking comfort from some fucking evil status quos.

She was right about everything when it came to the Catholic Church.
They didn't wanna hear that shit.

At least those assholes had their political hangups as an excuse, the rest went after her for her hair and clothes like a bunch of girl-bullies in a high school locker room out of "Carrie".

No one I ever respected hated her.
Frank Sinatra said some shit when he was still breathing.
Fuck your ashes, you mafia prick.

Enough politics, she had a gorgeous set of pipes.

Her last thing she did was the updated theme song for Outlander season 7.

And the first thing I ever heard her do, even before "Nothing Compares 2 U" was "I Want Your Hands On Me" from closing credits of "A Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master".
Yep, Rachel Talalay was a Sinead fangirl before she broke big, and finagled the single for the soundtrack.

No one remembers that.
They remember "Dream Warriors" by Dokken.
They remember "Why Was I Born?" by Iggy Pop.
They forget the Sinead track.
Go give it a spin.
It's nice.
Sexy, but you can dance to it.

Anyway, goodbye, Sinead.
You are missed.

Happy 7th anniversary, Ghostbusters: Answer The Call!

Previously-

-Year 1 (Comics crossover)
-Year 2 (Ultimate comics crossover)
-Year 3 (35th anniversary comic)
-Year 4 (No real news)
-Year 5 (Ditto)
-Year 6 (Afterlife was in development at the same time. CHUDs are liars)

What's happened since last year...

Trump just got indicted!!
So, I can go ahead, and bump this evergreen post!

And! 6/15, saw ATC on MTV2, and it's the extended director's cut!
So, it's still chugging along!

Update- GB: Spirits Unleashed added a DLC pack of the ATC uniforms, packs, and traps.

Unless the girls pop up as opposites of the ATC cameo characters in Firehouse/Hell's Kitchen, another quiet year.

Next year will be the 40th for Ghostbusters overall, and the 8th for ATC, and as I said here...

I think it'll lay low until GB2020 (now Afterlife) is in the rear-view mirror, and they've made their money, and it's on home video....and then ramping up towards and up to the 40th anniversary, the girls will be rolled back out again.

40th, definitely.
Which'll be the 8th anniversary of ATC.
Two years later, we'll hear some 10th anniversary stuff, hopefully the fan atmosphere will have lightened up a bit.
The scars for the actresses and Paul Feig should have healed by then.
Maybe we'll get some belated making-of stuff.

Speaking of scars healing, now for cast/director updates.

-Kristen Wiig is going to be in Palm Royale.
-Melissa McCarthy's in Little Mermaid. ...and an annoying Booking.Com ad. And an episode of Hot Ones.
-Kate McKinnon is in Barbie.
-Leslie Jones guest hosted Daily Show, and guest starred on "Our Flag Means Death".
-Chris Hemsworth is in Extraction 2, and is going to voice Optimus in "Transformers: One".
-Paul Feig is working on Spy 2, and he's executive producer on "Minx".

They're still ticking!

See you next year!
