The big 2016-2017 movie recap!

Here we go again!

And now, here they all are.
For the year of 2016-2017.
Merging summer of 2016, with winter of 2016-2017.

Previously...

The big 2015-2016 movie recap!

And now, the list.

1. Logan.

Transcends the genre.

2. Rogue One.

It's Star Wars. Good Star Wars.
Good Star Wars gets high on any list.

3. Lego Batman.

Ditto Logan.

4. Civil War.

Best within its genre, but again, 1 and 3 transcend.

5. Doctor Strange.

Among the best Marvel stand-alones.

6. Ghostbusters: Answer The Call.

Gone down a couple stars, but I still love it.
And thanks to Ghostbusters 101, it's retroactively Ghostbusters 3 now.

7. Ash vs Evil Dead.

Best season so far.
Favorite Evil Dead anything next to good old "Evil Dead 2".

8. Suicide Squad.

Meh, least good of the DCEU so far, but still enjoyable.

9. X-Men Apocalypse.

Gone down a bit since first viewing, but it has great parts to it.
Quicksilver running through the explosion, and Fassbender's acting in the first third, mostly.

10. Star Trek Beyond.

One of the best Treks in a long ass time, and in another year, it could have been in the top 5, but what a damned year!

11. Justice League Dark.

Dug it. Nothing on this list is really bad, or even a letdown.
But, something had to get down here.

12. Batman: Return Of The Caped Crusaders.

Ditto.

13. Sausage Party.

Could have been better with the ideas it was playing with, but for what it is, solid job, and made me laugh.

14. Ghostbusters 101.

Again, not far enough into this series to judge. I'll re-assess in 6 months.
I can't imagine the creative team involved dropping the ball.

Aaaand, that's it.
Summer 2017 starts with "Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2".
See you then!

The big winter movie recap. Part 2.

Previously...

The big winter movie recap. Part 1.

Now, the movies...

1. Logan.

Like I said in the review, the summer superhero movies are gonna have to be absolutely fucking incredible to knock this off its perch.

2. Rogue One (First, second).

Just shows how goddamned good "Logan", was  that this one didn't get the number 1.
If this is just the taste of how good the anthology films can be, I'm giddy as shit for the Han Solo prequel.

3. Lego Batman.

Might just be my favorite Batman movie.
As a spoof movie, this is up there with "Airplane", and "Spaceballs".
It's the "Spaceballs", of Batman.
It's Batballs.

4. Doctor Strange (First, second).

One of my favorite standalone Marvel character films ever.
The Captain America sequels are really mini Avengers movies, so....its real competition is Ant-Man, and Iron Man 1.
Yeah, three-way tied with Ant-Man and Iron Man.

5. Ash vs Evil Dead (Premiere, series recap).

This season was glorious.
Let's hope they can maintain the upward trajectory next year.
Fingers crossed for a crossover with the remake.

6. Justice League Dark.

Pretty fucking sweet. Now let's get it in live-action.
Chop-chop, Warner Bros.

7. Batman: Return Of The Caped Crusaders.

Gotta get this and Lego Batman into my collection for the double feature!

8. Ghostbusters 101.

Too early into the series to judge so far.
Like what I'm seeing, but not much has happened yet.
Get back to me in six months.

So, that's winter of 2016-2017.

Next comes "Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2", and we're back to summer again.

Up next for these, the year round recap lumping this, and summer 2016 together.
Stay tuned!

Big Winter Movies Part 2. (Part 7).

And finally, after much delay by weather and bullshit, it's.....

Logan (2017)

Previously with this franchise...

Rundown.
  • Fucking WOW.
  • The best of the 3 Wolverine spinoffs sweatlessly. It didn't have to leap high to get over those.
  • The best X-Men film? Sss...I dunno...hmm....yeah. Yeah, it's a smaller film than the big CG fests, but story and character wise, fuck yeah.
  • One of the best superhero movies ever? Hmm...yep. Yeah, easily right up there in the upper echelon with "The Dark Knight", and "Winter Soldier".
  • This is the Wolverine we always wanted to see, and that Jackman always wanted to play. This is what you've been waiting for.
  • If we lived in my perfect dream world, this deserves a stack of Oscars. One for Jackman, one for Stewart, one for the movie itself. I'm not optimistic about the Academy's tastes, but...you never know, Heath Ledger got one for "Dark Knight". We'll see. If it gets snubbed, 2017's Oscar-bait movies had better be absolutely fucking incredible.
  • I can't think of any nitpicks. This thing is perfect as far as I measure things.
  • 10 out of 10 for me.
  • I know it's some critic superstition you're supposed to save that 10 for like, if aliens arrive on the White House lawn, and holo-project the movie so good that it kills you, but...fuck that chickenshit bullshit, 10. 10 muthafuckas. 10!!!
  • The rest of the superhero movies for this summer will have to be pretty damned fantastical to knock this off its perch. The bar has been set. We'll see.

So, yeah, go see it.

Up next, to kill off winter once and for all, Ghostbusters 101*.

(*Yeah, it's a comic instead of a movie, but it's movie connected, part of canon cuz Ivan Reitman says so, and the only direct "Answer The Call", sequel we'll probably get)
