Superheroes 2.5: Part 4- Kick-Ass 2.

Well, it's hard to impossible for me to be objective about this one, but...fuck it, I fucking love it.

It's not doing great at the box-office, critics are being bitches, but, fuck it/them.
It's SO going in the collection.
The second it hits.

Okay, here's the flashback to my re-review of Kick-Ass 1.

Pretty much that, and with this one, we get more of it.
More heroes, more bad guys, more fights.

This was finally the summer movie that gave me the BIG buzz walking out of the theater.
This one talked right to my fucking heart.
That's why it's hard to be objective.

Pretty much everything the critics find repellent, and morally upsetting about these characters, is what I fucking love.
It's really that basic.
Fuck you people.
I have no use at all for normality, conformity, and banality, every line about being your true self, and on and on, spoke right to me.
Loved it all.
I am the fucking the nut they made this movie for.
The one you're afraid will see this, I'm that guy.
I say that with no shame.
Fuck you.

And...interestingly, that takes us to Jim Carrey.
Fuck him for pussing out on this flick, and washing his hands of it, I'd respect him more if he gave the money back, or away.
But, he kept the fucking dough, so, fuck him, and his phony-liberal bullshit.

So, seeing this flick will spite him, so, there's that, and he's actually pretty great in it.
I can't fault his performance.
He doesn't take it over the top at all, like in "The Mask", or "Batman Forever", he's just right.
You can tolerate him.

But, let's stop dancing around, the real reason to see this, is Hit-Girl.
She's the star of both of these.
We wanna see where she is in her personal development.
We wanna see her kill bad guys.
Well, she's fucking great.
We get waylaid for a bit with her trying to "fit in", but don't worry, that goes away, and we're finally delivered the goods.
And you know it's coming, so that's not spoilers.
Come on, the ads give it away.
Oh, yeah, right, no, Mindy is gonna be in her pink backpack for the whole movie, come on.

Hit-Girl vs Mother Russia?
Best hero/villain fight of the summer.
Most emotionally satisfying.

Gotta say though, good as this is, my favorite "normal people as superheroes", movie is still "Super".

But, I do admire the balls on this one.

The very very ending seems like it's trying to play it safe, and tell you "normal life is the right path", but...bullshit.
That's shit the producers HAD to do, or get in trouble.

Well...the whole movie goes back and forth on that one.
So, either they're trying to eat their cake, and have it too, or they're "leaving me the viewer to make up my own mind".
Well, I'm the fucking writer of Jade-Shade, guess where I went?

Ehh...I can't think of a bullet-point list for this one, so, I'm breaking format.
What the Hell.

Does it have its flaws?
Sure.
Did I give a fuck?
Obviously not.

Um, yeah, so if you at all liked the first one, I'd totally recommend this.

If you're not into superheroes, or think they should solely be for kids, this isn't going to bring you around.

If you're offended by violence and language...get the fuck off my blog.
Fuck are you even doing here?

Soooo, I thought I was gonna be done after this one, but "The World's End", is calling out to me.
So, guess I'm seeing that too.
And, that'll make the summer recap a nice even number.
So, look forward to one more of these.

Attack Of The Mutants!

There we go, found it.

The zombies are called mutants, but that's the game I mentioned in the George Romero Dead Series review.

Turns out, it's a board game.
Coulda sworn it was more like D&D.
Well...it well could be, D&D had boards and maps.

Anyway, I'll retro-link that into the Dead review.

Happy 1st anniversary, The Continued Adventures Of Harry Hembock (on KINDLE!)

The original release.

Order here!

More recap.

On top of the Kindle release of book 2, it's the year anniversary of the two month anniversary of my first attempt to upload book 1 on Kindle.
Told that story here.
So, here we are.

So....ranted about life, ranted about tech stuff, how about we combine the books and life.
Looking back, have I lived my life by Harry's example?

Funny thing, when I dug these babies out of the dusty clutter pile to publish, and read 'em all for the first time in a few years, I almost choked up a little, and said to myself "fuck...Harry KNEW!".

And by that, I meant "Harry", as in, the part of my brain that became Harry in my fugue state while drawing.
And by "knew", I meant, knew the bullshit I thought I was learning in my supposed adulthood.
Harry fucking knew it already, and he tried to tell me.

I got knocked off my horse in a few spots, people tried to cram their bullshit into my head, and pour their elixirs down my gullet, but the person who came out the other end knowing for sure it was all bullshit...was already in those pages.

Shoulda just stuck to Harry like a fuckin' Bible, man.

So, here's some of Harry's wisdom.

1. Stand up for yourself. Don't take their shit.

This seems so basic, but it's amazing just how much shit people will fucking take.
The petty little abuses in their daily lives, and the big tyrannical shit coming down from the upper 1%.
Fuck these people, they're all out for themselves, and they want to snuff out your light to make their dim dumbass selves look brighter.

Don't. Take. Their. Shit.

I really try to abide by this one, I don't always succeed, and I kick myself when I don't, and try to fix it.
Hanover, Toys R Us, and Wal-Mart was me taking shit.
Never again.

2. "Law and order", and justice are often miles apart, and the former isn't your friend.

Well, I never forget this one.
Whether it's watching the news, or my neighbor starting his trillionth backyard garbage inferno without a permit, flaunting that we can't do anything, because his cousins have all butt-fucked their way into local government, I'm always full aware, that cops are largely a goon squad of the state, protecting the 1% from street crime, and the yuppies and their minivan hellspawn from having to look at hobos.
It's just this game society plays.
And it's a lame bureaucratic game, like Yahtzee, and Stratego.
It's not even fun.

If a "good cop", has helped you, that's a freak mutation.
And they still serve a corrupted system.

3. Fuck letting others think for you.

Oh, sure, fuck religion, I had that nailed back in the 90's, that even more shames me about my couple-year Deist phase.

But fuck all the brain-washers.
Fuck TV telling you who your heroes ought to be, just so they can tear these assholes down when they fuck a nanny, fuck TV telling you who's good at playing make-believe, fuck Hollywood movies, and their fake evil version of romance, fuck sitcom writers, and their greeting card pearls of wisdom, fuck the government's account of things, they lie like a sheet, fuck it all.
You know how you feel.
You know what's fucking irritating.
Don't get peer pressured into thinking annoying stupid bullshit is "just something we've got to go along with".
Especially to keep fair weather friends.
Any time there's a boat everyone's getting on, you probably ought not.

And if the cattle get indignant?
See #1.

This one chooses me, I can't go along, I'm not wired for it.
But I have had my shameful periods where I let this make me feel guilty.
Even times where I actually thought it was something wrong with me.
If I could have avoided those years of self-inflicted misery....*sad head shake*

Well, I still let guilt and uncertainty creep in sometimes.
Happened in my "Pacific Rim", review.
No, fuck that.
Fuck "Pacific Rim", in the ear.
Del Toro is a sellout multi-millionaire playing with rich boy toys.
When you become a multi-millionaire, you don't get to be "hip", anymore.
Talking to you especially, Zach Galifianakis.
This sick country has to stop coveting the doodads of their oppressors.
It really is the American disease.
But that's another rant.

4. The music industry is another source of bullshit. See #3.

Nuff said.

5. The prison system is a nightmare where civilization fucking ends. See #2.

Nuff said.

6. And you know what? Let's just throw the courts in there with #5 and #2.

Nuff said.

7. Relationships ain't what they're cracked up to be. Tread carefully.

Holy SHIT have I ever bungled this one over the years.

I really have come to conclude that full-bore romantic infatuation is a fucking medical condition.
People who enter into this state really need to try to hold that in their mind.
Hell, it can even fucking KILL you.
Look at "Romeo & Juliet". Fucking dead.
This has to be taken more seriously, and not shrugged off.
Society just giggles over the whole mess.
"Ohhh howw sweeet".
*Eyeroll*

8. Push the boundaries, and damn the naysayers.

There you go, you get that one for free, without having to sit through the fucking Steve Jobs movie.

9. Magic is bullshit. Also, see #3.

On its face, sure, but it isn't just magicians.
Psychics, fortune tellers, UFO "experts", "Crypto-zoologists", it's all scams, it's all a magic act, it all ought to be booed off the stage.
Hard.

10. Big business is bullshit. See #9.

Fuck "big", anything, really.
When anything gets "big", it's not about what it's about anymore.

Look at professional sports.
It's grown-ass steroided men playing a children's game, and the corporations are all out to get their slice of it come Superbowl night, and it's just this big, disgusting, diarrhea, bukakke, and blood mess out of "The Aristocrats".

Well, that's big business in a nutshell, and the financial collapse of '09 should have been a hard enough punch in the face to wake you up.

"Too big to fail", was a legalized jack of the country, you all just sat back and took it, violating rule #1, and...yet, crooks in suits is still this country's vision of "success".

And I'M the one that's gotta "grow up"?
I don't think so.
I think there's some fairy tales you people seriously have to snap out of.
Before it kills your fucking ass.

Nope, all the economic theory from professors, all the fancy equations, come '09, it was all a lie, and it really was all "smartsy-fartsy, smartsy-fartsy, jargon, jargon, jargon".
Sounded good, empty of meaning.
And the bullshit artists knew it.
It was a magic trick.
You fucking, fucking, suckers.

Just wait until those "collateralized debt obligations", explode in your faces.

11. The presidency isn't all that it's cracked up to be either. See #9 and #10.

Jesus, do you realize, there used to be a time in this country, where people used to dream of their kids becoming president?
And kids wanted to be president to please their parents?
I mean, really, president was considered like, the highest human type.
Like, something to ASPIRE to.
How utterly disgusting.

This is just left over evolutionary hierarchical bullshit from our chimpanzee cousins.

12. Y'know what? Be GLAD religion is bullshit. See #3 and #9.

Cuz it would be SO fuckin' silly if it weren't.

13. Live your dream. Cuz there's really fucking nothing else. See #1, #3, and #8.

See here for the whole Jo-Jo strip.

I think I've lived my life by that one.
I let myself get waylaid by external jackassery, and some of my own bad choices, but all that was delays, I never really took outright wrong paths that led me completely away from what I wanted to do.
I haven't lived a false life of unhealthy compromise.
Yeah, I think I'm pretty good on this one.
I could always be better, but overall, no regret.

14. All emperors are naked, and all rule is petty. See #2, #3, #5, #6, #10, #11, and #12.

The whole Edward Snowden soap opera ought to be making that clear.

15. All evil destroys itself in the long run.

It really can't help itself.
It's the greed, and the caprice.
No matter how "logical", these fuckers try to be, their crimes are driven by lusts, and passion always bites you in the ass.
Mankind canNOT control that fucking flame.

And, I'm really glad evil doesn't learn that lesson.
The faster they flame out, the faster the scumbags are gone.

I enjoyed every dot-com collapse in the 90's, and don't worry, the "too big to fail", fuckos will get theirs.

It's all just bad weather.

Well, there, that's just out of books 1&2.
Maybe I'll do a sequel for 3&4.

And, I'm even more proud of these books.
Buy 'em. ;-)

Adding to my collection (Part 14)

Or "The (long delayed) Troma review", addendum.

(See here for part 13.5)

The Sexy Box (2009)

Contains "Squeeze Play!", "Waitress!", "Stuck On You!", and "The First Turn On!", in one nice slim 4 disc clamshell.

Commentary by Lloyd Kaufman on each film.
A short retrospective of the 4 films from cast-members on the "The First Turn On!", disc.
A short interview with Michael Herz on the "The First Turn On!", disc.
"Big Gus, What's The Fuss?", is an easter egg on the "Squeeze Play!", disc.
"The Girl Who Returned", is an easter egg on the "Waitress!", disc.
"The Battle Of Love's Return", is an easter egg on the "Stuck On You!", disc.
"The First Turn On!", has an easter egg that doesn't seem to do anything. Anyone else having this problem?
No commentary on the easter egg movies. Alas.

So, ahhhh, there, my Troma collection is complete. Bliss.
Another one down.

And yes, if you're a Troma fan, I recommend this set.

Happy 10th anniversary, Freddy vs. Jason!!!!!!!!

All the drugs in meeee!!
All the bugs in meee!!
How can I liiiive without yooouu!!!!???

(See here, here, here, and here, from last Halloween for the setup of this running gag)
So, what's in store this year?
Well, I upgraded my copy of "Never Sleep Again", to the one with the commentary track.
So, with the main feature, the commentary, and the bonus disk, that bumps up from 8 hours to 12 of juicy crispy Freddy goodness, and that includes FvsJ.
With all that, I'll truly never sleep again.

And, there's another 18 hours coming from the same gang, via "Crystal Lake Memories", and that'll also include another pass at FvsJ from the Jason perspective.

So...SQEEEE!!!
And I've got Blu-Ray now, so I'm all set to go there.
May the party never end.

The Big Romero Dead Series Review.

Or, "Adding To My Collection Part 13.5".

(See here for part 13)

So, this'll be easy, I'll just shoot the shit about the Romero Dead Sextilogy until I tucker myself out, and then hit "publish".

Night Of The Living Dead (1968)

See here, and here.

The classic, it's the most imitated movie ever, created a whole sub-genre, and it still gets TV play, especially every Halloween.

Simple story, radiation from space makes everyone who dies for any reason come back as a zombie.
If they bite you, you become a zombie that much faster.
But, really, they wanna eat your guts.
Only thing that stops them is to destroy their brain, usually with a bullet to the head.
Our protagonists hole up in a house, and the fight for survival begins.

Put this simple idea in the hands of seemingly anyone else but Romero and his gang, and you get schlock.
Ditto Evil Dead and Raimi.
Talent fucking matters.

And y'know, this is really the only scary one of the bunch.
The rest are just varying levels of fun.
Well...I guess they're all scary if you can't stand the gore, but...horror junkies like me just giggle with delight.

Dawn Of The Dead (1978)

See here.

I nailed it back then, the Star Wars of horror.

And, y'know what?
Nostalgia brushed aside, lately I enjoy the Dead sextilogy better than the Star Wars sextilogy.

Star Wars, you got two great ones, and one okay one, Dead, you got 4 great ones, one pretty great one, one okay one.
As a series, it's more fun to watch, less speedbumps.

So, anyway, here, the infestation is in full swing, and we get to see a bit of the bigger scope of it all, and it's not going well for the humans.
Long story short, this is the one where our heroes hole up in a shopping mall.

It's fucking epic.
I could watch it a million times, and not get sick of it.
Everyone loves it, it's most people's favorite, it's been remade, it's the inspiration for several video games, "The Walking Dead", borrows heavily from this and "Day", and I swear, I have an old back issue of Hulk from 1981, that has an order form on the inside cover for a paper/dice RPG where you're in the zombie apocalypse.
So, fandom of this sub-genre took off right from "Dawn".
It ain't new.
Just the size of it is.
Hell, I had no internet to check, but it may even be the same size, and we just know about it now.
I heard in one of the commentaries that there was even an officially sanctioned board-game.
Damn, how sweet would it have been if there'd been figures, vehicles, and a playset of the mall?
Come on, you know you want it. *Smirk*

Day Of The Dead (1985)

See here.

So talked about this one last time, and in the first review for "Survival".

People were originally disappointed with this one after "Dawn", and that's understandable, you can't top that one, but, this one has better writing, acting, and effects, and the darker tone really makes this one cooler.

Budget constraints forced this one to scale down, but George chose the smaller budget to have complete creative control.

I love it.
I really fucking love it.

The characters are all fucking great, even the bad guys.
The best ones are no doubt Dr. Logan, and Bub.
Yes, a zombie is a character in this one.
And he should have gotten an Oscar.
I'm dead serious.

Anyway, this one is well into year two of the infestation ("Dawn", having spread out over year one), and humanity is all but wiped out, and an increasingly shrinking handful of survivors is living in an underground military bunker converted from an abandoned salt mine.

As can be expected, they're way more stir crazy, and at each other's throats than the heroes of "Night".
Meanwhile, Dr. Logan is trying to find a method of training zombies to be docile, and his star pupil is Bub.
The soldiers, who risk their lives to get test subjects, have no patience for this at all.
It's a pressure cooker.
A glorious magnificent pressure cooker.

Did I mention I love it?

Fun fact: the heroine of this one is the daughter of the guy who played the TV interviewer in "Night".

Land Of The Dead (2005)

See here.

Well, I reiterate what I said there about people having to warm up to this one.
I dunno what it is, but even Romero himself has observed it.
"Day", took awhile, this one did, "Diary", did, and "Survival", still hasn't clicked.
Well, the hardcore fans took right to "Survival", I'm still struggling.

But, I took right to this one.
I think its fucking great.
This is essentially what George wanted "Day", to be before he had to scale it back.
Which drives me crazy why some people hated it.
When it was just "Dawn", and "Day", it's like "oh, if only George didn't have to scale back! Imagine what he could do with a big budget!".
He finally gets the big fucking budget "oh, it's too slick! Waah!".
*Facepalm*
Please, just shoot yourselves.
In the head, so you don't come back.

Anyhoo, this one, it's year three of the infestation, we're left to assume humanity is all but gobbled up, and the last outpost is a small city renamed Fiddler's Green, run by Dennis Hopper.
The scale is as big as these are ever likely to get, and the look and tone is as dark, if not darker, than "Day".
It's kind of "Road Warrior", meets zombies at this point.

Simon Pegg (from, of course "Shaun Of The Dead") cameos as a zombie, and the heroine in this one is the daughter of Dario Argento, who funded "Dawn".
And she's a little fox.

Also, Tom Savini pops up as his character from "Dawn".
...but no one involved is allowed to say so, cuz of legal ownership issues.
Go figure.

The biggest controversy in this one, is here, the zombies evolve, and start to get smart.
*Shrug* I dunno why this upset people, it was totally set up in "Day", with Bub, and there's even little hints of it in "Night", and "Dawn".
It's the natural progression to me.

I think "zombie culture", has been tainted by all these knockoffs.
They forget what the Romero-verse is really about.

So, anyway, George has said that he'll never make one that happens any farther after this one, because after this, the zombies win, and he wants his dead movies to be about the humans.
He wrote a comic series about warring zombie tribes, but that's semi-canonical.
But yeah, no all-zombie films. "Land", is the (chronological) end.

Which brings us right to....

Diary Of The Dead (2007)

See here.

Like I said there, I took right to this one.
In fact, they had me right at the premise.

It goes all the way back to the first night of the infestation, during "Night", (but in modern times, so the chronology of this world is a bit wonky) and a bunch of film students who are out making a horror movie end up documenting the zombie outbreak.

And, as I said last time, it kicks "Blair Witch", and its whole sub-genre in the dick.
With a steel toed workboot.

You're dead, "found footage", sub-genre.
The master done pwned you.
It's over.

Fun fact: Simon Pegg, Wes Craven, Stephen King, Quentin Tarantino, Tom Savini, and Guillermo del Toro all cameo as radio voices.

Survival Of The Dead (2009)

See here, and here.

Said most of it there.

Said last time I'd watch it again, and I have.
Mmm....still not a fave.
Still the least good.

I stand by, that at worst, it's as good as an episode of "The Walking Dead".
At best, a little better than that.

Compare it to other knockoff zombie flicks out there, and this still stomps those into the ground though.
So, as an overall horror flick, no way does it "suck".
I've seen it compared to a SyFy channel movie.
Bull-fucking-shit.

Still, even seeing the political allegory stuff better the third time around, it only went up half a star.

This one, takes the soldier character from "Diary", and spins him off.
Where "Diary", was on the grid, this one's off the grid.
The heroes end up on an island off the coast of Delaware, and once there, two rival families are going at each other like Hatfields and McCoys, and the tone is of a western.
Yep, a zombie western.
Well, George likes to make every one different...

So, house, mall, bunker, city, Winnebago, island.
What's left? Submarine?

The idea is good, the cinematography is gorgeous, the landscapes are lush, the acting is decent, the characters are likable, probably even the best since "Day", the practical effects are decent, the CGI is passable, if not great....
Just...something's missing.

And...what (I think) it is, is a subliminal thing, and I think George would cop to it.
They didn't get to shoot enough coverage, which means, George didn't get to work his editing magic.
You get to see a really good technical breakdown of this in the commentary for "The Crazies".

Without that dynamic editing, the pace is slowed down.
That's the big handicap in this one.

And that all came down to time.
They had a bigger budget than "Diary", but it had a short schedule to begin with, and they lost a lot of time to horrible weather.

It's a testament to George's talent that it's as good as it is.
That's why I said before that the documentary is actually more interesting than the flick.

I'm sure though, that hindsight over the 00's, and what they stood for, will age this one into another classic.

Anyway, a couple new zombie rules are added here.
The smart zombies start to creep back in, and one of them can ride a horse, and another starts a car.
And, zombies can eat other things besides humans.

The latter "The Walking Dead", already played with, but it's new to Romero-verse.
Although, that one chick-zombie ate a bug way back in "Night", so...

Okay, that's that one, now we look to the future.

Right now, it's two trilogies...

...but George says he's has two left in him, and intends it to be two quadrilogies.

He's worried about living long enough to finish the series, so, he wants the last ones to be back-to-back like "Kill Bill", or "Deathly Hallows".

All we know for sure about them is this...
  • He wants to lay out "the zombie rules", once and for all, and in detail.
  • He wants to continue what he's got going with spinning off characters from "Diary".
  • And that, because he regrets he didn't get to do the continuity thing with the first four, because different studios own them, but now he can with these ones, cuz he's got his own little Canadian studio behind him.
  • The aforementioned thing about they'll never go beyond the time frame of "Land".
  • They'll probably won't get up to the time-frame of "Land", either.
  • Whatever the first of these new ones will be, will be the first one to comment on the decade of the 10's, so, that'll be a moment in horror history. The post-Obama-election Romero, what'll that look like?
  • There will be zombies, gore, and misanthropic cynicism.
  • I can't wait.

Aaand, I think that's everything I wanted to say.

Yep.
Okay, "The End", then.
Bye.

Adding to my collection (Part 13)

(See here for part 12)

Night Of The Living Dead (1968)

The 40th anniversary one with the commentary by Romero, and the documentary that reunites the stars (except Duane Jones), and the final audio interview of Duane Jones from '88.

Got this before in that 10 pack back in March, and the video quality is MUCH better than that one, as can be expected.

The bonuses are top notch.
The doc is up there with "Never Sleep Again", for nostalgia/fun level.

I'm going to do a more in-depth review on the Romero dead flicks, so...I'll just talk about DVD stuff with this one.

Day Of The Dead (1985)

Got this on the same trip as "Night", to finally bookend "Dawn", and complete the original trilogy.

Had so much other shit to get the past couple years, just never seemed to get around to it.
Rectified now.

Only bonuses are a commentary with George Romero, and Tom Savini.
But, hey, good enough for me.

Said last time in my "Survival", review, this one was under-appreciated, and has aged like a fine wine.
Could be my favorite.

Land Of The Dead (2005)

So, after I marathon-ed "Night", "Dawn", and "Day", and exalted in their glory, I was naturally craving more.
Like a zombie craves flesh.

So, as said last time, had to get 'em.

Glad I did, I really dig this one.
Lot of reviewers nitpicked the hell out of it, and whined like babies, but I just don't see the problem.
I think it fits right in with the first three.
I love it the more I see it.
I'll get into that more in the actual Dead series review though.

This one got all the DVD bells and whistles.
Commentary, docs, deleted scenes, the whole shmeal.
Nice.

Diary Of The Dead (2007)

Another one nitpicked in its original release, and another one I fell in love with at first sight.
I just don't get these fans that know what this series is about, what Romero is about, and then each fucking new one throws them a mental curve ball.

Each one of these keeps up with the times that are going on, and this one comments on the internet/Youtube/everyone-has-a-fucking-camera age, and, frankly, this kicks "Blair Witch", in the dick.
Both as a film, and message wise.
To me, this closes the "Blair Witch", chapter of film history for good.
Every "found footage", knockoff flick afterward is living in pathetic denial.

Anyhoo, like "Land", this had all the bells and whistles.

Survival Of The Dead (2009)

Talked about it some here.

Said it was "the least good", but...now that I'm starting to unravel more of the political content of this one, I'm starting to dig it a whole lot more.
I really need to watch it again.

This one was a 2-disc set, and the doc on this was almost more fun than the film itself.

Be forewarned, "Land", was the big-budget blowout of all of them, but George has deliberately gone back to his low budget indie roots for "Diary", and "Survival".
People have whined about the cheapness, but, the FIRST one was cheap!
People will cry about anything.

The Crazies (1973)

See here.

Only bonus is a George commentary.
Good 'nuff.
Got this along with "Land", "Diary", and "Survival".

Cabin In The Woods (2011)

See here.

Love it, instant classic.
Got this along with "Night", and "Day".

Bonuses out the ass.
Documentary reveals that Heather Langenkamp (as Heather Anderson) and her husband did the practical monster makeups and puppets for this show.
Awesome!

So, there, that's those collected.
