James Gunn has been a comic book geek for quite some time.
His association with superhero films goes back practically to the beginning.
Before he flexes his muscles as head-honcho of DC, let's take a look back.
He cameos as a dollar store Stephen Hawking.
I gave it a bad review, and didn't even know it was his.
He's done better.
But, other cult film enthusiasts love it, so what do I know?
You can see early on his love of 70's-80's radio hits on display here.
VAST improvement over "The Specials".
Fully on display is his weird mix of sex/potty humor, gore, and...heart.
Yeah, he can make you barf one minute, and cry the next.
Its an audience impact I've sought all my life.
Top tier Marvel.
I saw it at the theater three times.
Both of these were more heart than...his adult stuff.
Although, the potty stuff was there a little bit.
Not quite as good as 1, but still pretty damned good.
Making a sequel to perfection has always been tricky.
He was producer, while his brother directed.
Evil Superboy.
It's back-door Elseworlds.
Sneakily connects to 'Super" with a blink-and-you'll-miss-it Easter egg.
Funny to look back, and reflect that Gunn produced this, and now he's producing/writing/directing real Superman.
He's full gore and potty mode here.
Not so much the heartstring stuff.
Well...Ratcatcher is good, and has heart.
Everyone else is a horrible human being.
Fun movie regardless.
I mean, "Clockwork Orange" is about a villain, right?
So, yeah, in hindsight, you can totally see him building the path to where he is now.
Seemed random and piecemeal as it was unfolding.
But, there you go; take it as inspiration!
I certainly will!
