Christmas loot 2024.

These all came on the 26th.
I got more shit coming....I dunno when.

Anyhoo!!

The Books Of Earthsea (2018)

Being the collection of....

-A Wizard Of Earthsea (1968)
-The Tombs Of Atuan (1971)
-The Farthest Shore (1972)
-Tehanu (1990)
-Tales from Earthsea (2001)
-The Other Wind (2001)

And it's a fucking tome!
It looks like a book of magic from a movie.

I used "Tehanu" to talk about the whole Earthsea series here...

Part 4 of the Earthsea series.
The prior entries being "A Wizard of Earthsea", "The Tombs of Atuan", and "The Farthest Shore".

All of which came out from 1968 to 1972.
I didn't find out about them until 1989 at Sweetser.
One of my few happy memories of the place.

No one told me, and news never managed to fall into my lap, that there was a fourth one.
Ditto that there was a fifth one "The Other Wind", in 2001.

(Blather about the magic system of the world snipped)

Anyhoo, the first three books are about the male wizard, Ged, and his rise from a child to an adult, and then into an old wizard.
4 and 5 are about the woman Tenar, who was introduced in "The Tombs Of Atuan".

Sci-Fi channel did a two part miniseries in 2004 called "Earthsea".
They had a blonde guy play Ged, who in the books is brown skinned, and black haired, and LeGuin called him "honkey Ged".
Also, the story was mutilated, and all wrong.

Then in 2006, Studio Ghibli did an anime adaptation called "Tales From Earthsea".
They got Ged's race right, ditto Tenar and Tehanu, but the story was all rearranged.
It's a neat little movie, but as an adaptation of the books, it's unrecognizable.

If they gave this Game Of Thrones money, and an executive producer who gives a shit, this could really be something.

Well, we've got the books.
And I've got catching up to do.

Well! 7 goddamned years later, I done caught up!
I used to have the first three, but they either got accidentally thrown out, or given away, or something, because I've turned the place upside down, and they're gone.

Well, I got 'em back, plus interest! 😉

Also said here...

I'll try to get the Earthsea collection this winter.
Brick-and-mortar in Maine isn't being helpful, so I'll make it my Amazon Christmas.
Stay tuned!

Bam! Here we are!!
Stay tuned for that read-a-thon!

Star Trek: Prodigy, season 2 (2024)

I've said before, the second half of Prodigy season 1, and all of Picard (especially season 3) feel like good TNG movies.
Well, add this season to the pile.

Great epic stuff. 😎👍

The Super Mario Bros Movie (2023)

The "Transformers The Movie" of Mario.
It's everything you ever wanted a Mario movie to be as a game fan.

Just like I wish I could send "Bumblebee" back in time to 1987, I wish I could send this back to tweenage me.

Just like "Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" and "Weird: The Al Yankovic Story" this brought back a lot of happy memories, and exorcised some bad ones

Now, if only we had a Metroid movie.

And, that's those.
Stay tuned for part 2....

I'm not really in much of a position to talk about this since I haven't played a "Metroid" game that was released after 1994...but since you said "Metroid movie," I thought of someone telling me that the "Metroid" series has actually become unpopular because of the cinematic cut scenes in the game. This may just be in Japan, I don't really know.

Holy shit is Tarkovsky's "Stalker" a cold, empty movie. Damn.

I likewise can't vouch for the later games, but Nintendo Power did a Metroid manga that was really well done. If they cribbed from that for the movie, they'd be in good shape.

This comic?

I actually kind of remember that one. I remember their "Star Fox" comic, too. Some of the characters in that comic were petitioned by fans to be in sequels to the game, actually...

I guess I remembered it through rosey glasses.

Now he has Pepe as an avatar. So, the richest man in the world is everyone's racist cousin who got nabbed for shoplifting candy bars. But don't ever suggest outlawing billionaires. That's a deep moral evil. Cuz reasons.
