Okay! So here, Billdude said....
Well you were right, there was an Oscar in Michael B. Jordan's future.
To which I said...
*Digs up my "Creed" review* Geez!! Took awhile though!! Yeah, I'm gonna grab "Sinners" next Bullmoose trip.
"Awhile" was 11 years!
And, I finally took that Bullmoose trip here, and watched it yesterday, and waited a full day to let it digest.
Loved it.
I said last time sight unseen...
Looks very "Lovecraft Country" and "Ring Shout".
I'd have to say the style and tone is that, but the storyline clearly draws inspiration from "Black Tom" and "Ring Shout".
But executed way better than both.
Well, all three, really.
Matt Ruff, Victor LaValle, and P. Djèlí Clark are great, but Ryan Coogler is a fucking master sorcerer.
The skeletal story is your standard "hole up in a place, and fend off monsters" plot, but the skeletal story of "Stand By Me" is boys going on a journey.
In both cases, it's so much more. So much richer.
Yeah, this deserved all its Oscars, and even some of the ones it didn't get.
I wish I could delve into it more, but it's one of those "you just have to see it" ones.
Wonderful. Think this is one of my new favorite movies overall, and definitely one of my new favorite horrors.
For vampire movies, I think this might just even dethrone "Fright Night" for me.
"Only Lovers Left Alive" and "Let Me In" came close, but didn't quite pull it off.
I think this might have done it.
Holy shit, folks.
