The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)

There. Seen the other geeky summer movie I give a damn about.

F4 franchise recap-

MCU recap-

Buildup to this one-

So!! This is the first movie of phase 6!
How we doing?
GREAT!

How's it stack up to other F4 flicks?
Easily the best.
Hell, the trailers alone squished the Josh Trank one.
Heh, FX network actually played Trank-tastic-Four last night.
I don't hate it, but it is indeed a weird cult movie on a scale next to "Madame Web".

This one is just wonderful. This one oozes heart.
I came this > < to bawling towards the end.
But,...certain events...probably made it hit me harder. Ahem.

How does it affect the meta-story?
All in good ways, I hope. The F4 are a much needed infusion of optimistic new blood that the MCU sorely needed.
I'll delve more into that in spoilers.

Umm....yeah, I think I actually like this one better than Superman.
By just a smidge. Okay, maybe a couple smidges.

14 years ago, I reviewed all the Marvel/DC comics crossovers.
They did one of Superman/Fantastic Four.
I said back then their tones and villain type go together like PB & J, and I said then Marvel and Warners need to make it a movie.
I stand by that.

James Gunn has said with him in charge, Marvel vs DC is closer than its ever been, but still years away.
Hint-hint wink-wink for what crossover to start with, James.

I'd like to think if Tim Story had been given a F4 parts 3 & 4 he would have gotten to this point in the story.
But, I think this one got to skip to Galactus and Franklin because that groundwork had been laid, even if in another universe.

She's fine.
There's nothing to complain about.
Heralds of Galactus are like Borg with PTSD.
She pulls that off well enough.
I'd like to see her in something that lets her flex her acting chops more.
I'm hearing interesting things about "Weapons".

Anyway! Back to this one!

I...think...and I could be wrong, and I may need to think it over some more...I think this one makes me like "Guardians 3" a bit better.

High Evolutionary is like an evil Walt Disney; even making a world full of talking animals.
Reed Richards is a good Walt Disney meets 50's-80's RCA development labs; actually delivering the goods to Earth of making an Epcot style utopia.
I bitched here that Disney-Marvel seems to loathe progressivism, and hocks loogies on utopia.
Nope, Reed Richards pulls it off. The MCU just didn't have a Reed Richards.
And I bitched here that Disney-Marvel, like most western pop-culture, shilled for status quo.
Can't say that after "Thunderbolts*".

And...

Spoiler-
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
The F4 spaceship shows up in the after-credits of "Thunderbolts*".
So, you get the saddest heroes segueing right into the happiest ones.
Feige planned this! You glorious magnificent bastard! 😲🤯

Spoilers end.

Anyway!! This one will make your heart feel great.
If you had "superhero fatigue" I think this might just fix it.
Go check it out.

So!! Next up for MCU phase 6 is "Avengers: Doomsday".
See you then!
