Pop culture updates #7.
Penthouse (the company) news!!!!
First of all Caligula is finally being restored to the director's original vision!!!
See, it got stolen from the director, Tinto Brass, halfway through, and Bob Guccione finished and edited himself.
Film fans wanted a director's cut based on Tinto Brass's notes, but the necessary film elements to do so were assumed lost and destroyed forever.
Well, a German film geek came to the newly minted female CEO of Penthouse, and they got digging, and they found a film vault Penthouse was paying to keep around they didn't even know they were paying for, and it had all the lost elements, so it's finally going to be restored.
Glad I held off, now I get to buy the final ultimate edition!!
Here's the Projection Booth episode of Caligula where they go through the winding history of all the different cuts in mind-numbing detail.
And here's the updated Projection Booth episode where they go through the saga of the fan who found the lost elements, and then Kelly Holland's saga of how she acquired, lost, and regained the company, before finally meeting up with the film geek guy, and finding Caligula.
In it, Kelly Holland mentions a lot of her dream future projects for Penthouse, one of which is to revive Omni, both in magazine form, and maybe to spin it off into a "Black Mirror", style Netflix or Hulu sci-fi anthology show of stories written in Omni.
So, Caligula and Omni fans rejoice!!!
And hoo-fucking-ray Kelly Holland!!

That's quite a few disc reissues for a movie that's so widely despised. I have seen the version without all the porno in it. I'm not sure who told Bob Guccione he was a film editor.
Tinto Brass: sad confession time....I've seen a couple of his films, and I watched them with other people. Uhh....holy sheeeeit. He has the visual sensibilities of a little boy who follows his mom up the stairs to peep up her skirt. We were laughing pretty hard all the way through at what a hilariously ogling perv the guy is, even in his own cameo (in the movie we watched, which was from the late 90s, Brass himself plays a guy who graphically finger-fucks his own lead actress, a blonde Eastern European girl who looked all of 19 years old, on screen.) Looking for reviews of the film online, I found someone who referred to it as "an epic meditation on butts."
I'd be curious to see the OMNI thing. There were a few old issues laying around my house actually, from like 1983 and shit. I remember reading a lot of junk science.
