AKA Lovecraft-verse side-quests bonus episode!
He-Man and the Masters of the Universe:
To Save Skeletor (1984)
So, y'know how multiple times, I've compared Lovecraftian-linked things to "Den" (featured in "Heavy Metal") which itself has its own particular Lovecraft connection?
Now, I've always thought both "Den" and "Taarna" are kind of R rated proto-He-Man and proto-She-Ra.
Whelp, I stumbled into that the He-Man writers bounced the volleyball back, and made a Lovecraftian reference.
In the episode "To Save Skeletor" Skeletor and Evil-Lynn summon a Lovecraft-like tentacle monster named Sh'Gora (depicted above) .
The alien-demon proves too powerful to control, and it takes the combined magic of Sorceress, Evil-Lynn, and Skeletor to banish Sh'Gora back to his dimension.
With the non-magical characters just piling whup-ass on the monster to slow him down.
The heroes and villains form a temporary truce to get rid of this one-time uber-villain.
It's the first and last time we see this.
As mentioned previously, Lovecraft despised "naïve romanticism" and "didactic moralizing" and it doesn't get more didactic and moral than friggin' He-Man. 😏
That's rebuttal enough to Lovecraft, but the aforementioned gay subtexts surely would have pissed him off too. 🥳🤪
So, yeah, that happened.
