Yup! Again! Her show is the gift that keeps on giving!
Okay, first, gotta re-state; MeTV has had drastically edited down half-hour editions of her show, but FETV has been playing the full-hour editions complete with musical numbers, and skits that are kinda-half-musical.
But also lost regular skits that I can't fathom why they were cut from the MeTV editions.
But!! Its come around to the end, and restarted, and there's even a lost season!
The very last season, Harvey Korman left, and Dick Van Dyke substituted for a few episodes.
I've been down research rabbit holes, and the Dick Van Dyke ones are considered the shark-jump, and supposedly legendarily bad, and Carol allegedly hates them, and thus why they're not in the half-hour ones.
I've seen 'em all now. I....liked 'em.
There are clunkers and stinkers in there, but there are some gems too.
The writing and chemistry were off without Harvey, but it was passable.
I found things to like.
All of that set to up!!!
Tucked away in the lost season, the un-loved season, Carol did a skit making fun of Anita Bryant.
Now, this needs a little setup.
Anita Bryant was a singer, and orange juice spokeswoman, and she was privately conservative for awhile, but got openly political.
And what she picked for her topic was anti-gay.
She was the J.K. Rowling of her day. Just like Rowling, she made it her life mission, and it became her whole personality.
Just like Rowling doesn't even talk about Harry Potter anymore, and only hates on trans people, Bryant went on a gaybashing screed every time she got a mic in front of her.
But!! Unlike Rowling, no one was like "hmmm....maybe she has a poooiiint, maybe you miiiight get raped in a bathroom...".
No, aside from Bible-belters, everyone fucking hated Bryant.
She was a fucking joke.
She even literally got hit with a pie in the face, and everyone cheered.
We've regressed.
The 2020's are less socially developed than the fucking 1970's.
Chew on that.
So!! To the Carol episode!
The skit is, it's a gay-friendly Hollywood party, Tim Conway plays Truman Capote, and then Carol as Anita shows up with a brooch made of oranges, and with a big jug of orange juice she fills people's glasses with. Like a homophobic female Kool-Aid Man.
She sings the "sunshine tree" song from the juice commercials, in case as a 70's person, you didn't catch she was Anita.
She seems oblivious to all the gay people at the party, and her song has all kinds of double-meaning gay tolerant lyrics that she also seems oblivious to.
The live-audience gets it, and laughs and cheers.
That's pretty frigging political for Carol.
I mean, she did have George Carlin on, and he really went for it, but she could always plausibly deny, and hide behind George.
No, she took Anita right on as herself here.
I briefly posited a skit like this being cut from the half-hour ones because there's conservative shenanigans going on at MeTV.
...but MeTV played the Carlin episode.
So, I dunno. Go figure.
Wild. Love it.
You love to see it.
I put this next to Rod Serling vs John Wayne in the "cool people kicking the crummy ones in the pants" file.
