Birthday loot 2025, Part 3.

-Part 1.

Well!! I'll be goddamned!! After letting me down with Le Guin, Bullmoose pulled through for me this time!! And with a not-usual book too!

Frederick Douglass: Autobiographies:
Narrative Of The Life (1845)
My Bondage and My Freedom (1855)
Life and Times (1881)

Lot of reasons.
Off the top of my head...

1. I always wanted to read his stuff. He's always referenced, and snippets of him are quoted in Civil War and Civil Rights documentaries, but they never just do an all Douglass one.
2. He's referenced in "Pym" so I can Kevin Bacon him into the next Poe-adjacent book-a-thon that way. Thanks, Mat Johnson. 😉😏
2.5. He even popped into my head in my "Antarctic Mystery" review. So, I've been thinking about him.
3. Lovecraft was a racist, Machen was a Francisco Franco lover; I'm gonna need some moral mouthwash, and just knowing King wrote "The Dead Zone" ain't gonna cut it.
4. He's exactly the kind of guy the MAGA swine will try to erase as "DEI" so like "Maus" grabbing this tome became imperative.

Fun facts:
-It's introduced by Henry Louis Gates Jr.
-Douglass's book is 100+ pages more than the whole Poe canon.
I don't know why that warms my heart, but it does. 😏

Captain America: Brave New World (2025)
Thunderbolts* (*AKA New Avengers) (2025)
Venom: The Last Dance (2024)

Yeah; topped off my Marvels.
Felt almost routine and perfunctory, like getting new catfood or butter.
Maybe they'll knock my socks off.
I'm more excited about the Douglass book, and I'm not gonna hide it.

I had to read Narrative Of The Life back for some college history/politics course but I can't remember much of it. I remembered Booker T Washington's "Up From Slavery" better. For, uh, some reason.

Oh great, Trump occupying fucking DC even though five seconds of research will prove crime is down. This is a fucking trial run for every blue city. Fucking prick, Trump.
