Location blogging #3.

Whelp, after being set-back by stupid technical difficulties Friday, and waylaid by jackassery over the weekend, I finally did Gorham.

So, here we go....

All right, pulling up over the hill...

Pretty good wide shot of everything...

Getting out the pen...

....red arrow, a real estate place I think...used to be a video store ages ago, more on that later.

Blue arrow, Gorham House Of Pizza.

Green arrow, Amatos, a sandwich/pizza shop.
Yeah, I know, right across the street from GHOP, but...they both do a good business, so...*shrug*

Okay, right up on this building now.
The outer facade has been radically remodeled, but like I said, way back in the 80's, it was the first video rental store around these parts.

They rented Atari games as well as video tapes.
They were way ahead of the curve on game rentals.

It's where I rented Captain Beeble!

Eventually, they went out of business, and sold everything, and I nabbed Captain Beeble.

Sometime in the early 90's, the connector to the Atari 400 broke, and I was never able to replace/fix it, so, it's packed away somewhere.

All that's left is the linked Youtube clip, and memories.

*Sigh*

Oh, okay, here the hill is crested, and here's a nice crisp wide shot of both sides of the street.

Better view of GHOP and Amatos, first clear shot of the other 2 buildings, more on those as I get up on them.

Okay, here we go.
White building has always looked like that, but back in the late 70's, early 80's, it used to be a sort of indoor flea market.

Lotta junk, my folks liked rifling through it, but I never found anything good.

Dunno what the fuck it is now exactly, never go in there, and not worth pulling over in steady traffic to find out.

Brick building is Sierra's.
Used to be a Mexican restaurant, but they turned it into a Sports Bar.
Hate Sports Bars, they fill right up with assholes.
Anyway, the food was awesome.
Best dish was "macho nacho"s.
Big heap of nachos with everything on 'em.
Fresh salsa, cheese, black olives, corn, sour cream, guacamole, and shredded marinated chicken.
The chips were all soggy in the middle, and you had to eat the whole mess with a fork.
*Drool, gurgle, gurgle*

Oh well, goodbye, Sierra's.

Okay, closer up view of Gorham House Of Pizza.
Used to go there way more often with the folks as a kid.
Haven't been there in ages.

The pizza there is fucking awesome.
Recipe hasn't changed since the 80's so, it's a time capsule right back to then.
Crispy crust, chewey everything else, glistening with heart-burney greese, oohhh....

Think I was there for my 12th birthday, yeah, had to be, and the TV was on MTV, and they played"the touch", and it was the first time I'd seen the video.

Gorham pizza, Transformers music, I was in heaven.
Heh, heh.
*Sigh*

Anyway, I had that blaring on the MP3 player as I went down this hill.
Made everything feel complete, y'know?

Yeah, I'm a sappy nostalgic bastid, whaddya gonna do?

So yeah, it wasn't for nothing I put those clips up over the weekend, it was to help set up this little reverie.

Okay, so the light finally lets me through, and we're past that damned intersection...

..not much to say about these 3 buildings, they were never businesses of interest to me no matter what they changed to.

The white and black one used to be an automotive store my dad used to check out when I was a kid. But, they're gone, and he's more obsessed with NAPA nowadays.

Anyway, they're only there for transition, really, get past those 3 fuckin' boring places, and we creep up on....

...a 7 Eleven!

I never go in there anymore.
They used to have Mad and Cracked magazines back in the day.
Ah, misty water-colored memories....

Okay, up the road a piece, and on my side of the street is this place...

Building is more or less intact in it's original form as I remember it.
Used to be a sort of half hardware, half department store.
They had some toys and coloring books and stuff when I was really little.

Okay, up the road a little bit more, is this complex.
I took this pic from the parking lot of Hannaford grocery store.

It looked way better in person.
I could read the signs and everything.
Dunno why it looks further away here.
Pissed me off.

Anyhoo, still looks okay, so I'm using it.

Okay, take it all in....

Now to get out the pen....

Right there, used to be Laverdiere's Superdrug.

It was a drug store, and department store rolled into one.
Kind of a baby Wal-Mart almost, long before there ever was a Wal-Mart.

Oh, I loved it as a kid, I loved it so damned much.
Candy, toys, and comic books all in one handy place.
And when I got a little older, I graduated up to Mad Magazines.

Would've been great to see it all the way up to Playboys, but fate didn't have that in mind, alas.

So many issues of Hulk, Swamp Thing, Mad, I think they even made it all the way up to the early days of Freddy-mania.

It was the core of Gorham for me.
The whole point of goddamned Gorham.
Only real use I ever had for it.

There's a specific tale revolved around a comic book from there, but I'll get into that a little later....

All right, that bit at the end?
Fuck it.
It was never anything good.
Never.
It was a crummy laundromat for ages, then it was some dumb yarn store or something, it's always been boring.
Always.

Moving along...

Oh, this place was cool...

They built the whole building next to Laverdiere's for this place, it was called Ben Franklin, and it was just fuckin' great.

It was another department store, but it had more toys, more candy, and way more trading cards.
With the Ben Franklin and Laverdiere's combo, I had everything my little kid heart desired.
Paradise.
True paradise.
Never been as happy since.

It's gone now.
Now it's a fuckin' Salvation Army.
Laverdiere's is gone too.
Been gone a long time.
*Sigh*

But my memory still goes there, like it should be there, like I could pull into it, and walk right in.
I even dreamt about it knowing I'd be coming here.

Heh, heh, sick and sad, huh?

Okay, this bit here is all one big Burger King.

Laverdiere's, Ben Franklin, Burger King, I had the fuckin' trifecta.

Fast food tastes better when you're a kid.

Nowadays,...meh...fills the hole.

And you're never like "gee, I'm glad I ate that", as Jim Gaffigan would say.

Geez, they make a big fucking deal about 99¢ Whopper Juniors.
I can remember 99¢ Whoppers!!
...well, they ain't ever gonna come back...
Gettin' old, Mike....

This bit here?
This just makes me sick.
It used to just be a big open hallway in between Ben Franklin and Burger King, but they recently wedged this fucking little insurance company in there, and now it fucks up the flow, and fucks up how you have to get into Burger King, and it's just a nasty little parasite of a business.
Vulgar.
Just fucking vulgar.

Hmm, what've we got left?

Ah, yeah, the big CVS drugstore.

They're pretty cool.
Almost compensates for the loss of Laverdiere's.
They've got just about everything Laverdiere's and Ben Franklin had combined, really.
But...no comic books...
Meh.
Too grown for most of 'em anyway.

Everywhere used to have a comic rack.
Now, only in comic shops, or on Amazon, or TFAW.

*Sigh* gettin' old, Mike....

Alright, now to turn the camera back around to Hannaford.

Okay, doing the pan from left to right.....

Aaaand, that's Hannaford.

Used to be "Shop N' Save".

First, it was just renamed, but then it was radically remodeled.

That's almost 3 times the size it used to be.

Anyhoo, here's where I get back to that comic book story I promised.
Indeed, it was the point of the trip.
A pilgrimage if you will.

Come with me around this corner....

...and it was right here where my life changed forever.

Okay, after the remodel, this has all been opened up, but it used to be more scrunched in.
But, right about here...

...is where my folks parked to go shopping.

No, it's not a crime story, it was something wonderful, simmer down.

It was 1984, we had just come from Laverdiere's and I had just picked up Swamp Thing issue 21.

The Anatomy Lesson.

My world was flipped upside down, and things were never the same again.
In a good way, of course.

Here at last, was real writing in a comic.
Gone after this were "Hulk smash!", and "holy ____ Batman!!", from my literary diet.

It was if I was blind, and could now see.

It was dark, there was a bluish fluorescent street lamp up above me, and I reread that issue almost 10 times as my folks farted around in the store like sloths.

In doing searches for the images, I joyfully discovered that The Anatomy Lesson is available legally for free from DC.
Read with me now....

Click.

*Sighs with joy*

Gold, all of it gold.

Imagine being hit with that at 9 going on 10, huh?

Holy shit, huh?

Well, if you're impressed, it's available for purchase bound up with the "Saga Of The Swamp Thing", collection.

Amazon linky.

And if that book pleases you, you'll want to get all of the Swamp Thing volumes, and then everything Alan Moore, and then when that's not enough, Neil Gaiman, etc, etc.

It'll joyfully lead you down the road to ruin, and I'm more than happy to pass that along. :)

So, that was Gorham.

Let's get the hell out of here now....

Okay, so heading back through Westbrook, and we're back at this intersection, but coming at it the other way.

Pen time.....

Red arrow is where I was coming from last time.

Blue arrow is where I'm going, and the lane you're supposed to be in.

Green arrow is where the little yuppie teenagers try to pass you on the outside, but aren't supposed to.

Little black SUV with a teenage bitch in it did it to me today.

Grr...

Anyhoo..

...here's a better shot of King's.

Hmm, just from 3 days ago, they've painted red from yellow....

Here's a better shot of Hansons...

Oh yeah, here's "the pumpkin tree".

Every Halloween going on a few years now, the owners of this farm hang all kinds of lit Jack-o-Lanterns from that tree.
It's a big spectacle, and they've been on the local news a bunch of times.

Okay, then we crest the hill, and here's a much better shot of the field from last time.

Ahah, and THIS time, the camera was charged properly, and stayed on as long as I needed, so this time, I got the Smiling Church.

Okay, just coming up on it...
There's the dead guy cross.

A better view...

Better still....

...and here's just past that damned shrubbery so you can see the door.

And that's it.

Thanks for taking this trip with me. :)

Hope you enjoyed it.

I sure did.
Been a great day.

Location blogging #2.

All righty, got out to the Portland area today, and all points in between....

Here's Borders out next to the Maine Mall.

I actually did a video journal in my car, but, the audio came out shitty, and I was a bit nervous talking to myself with yuppies walking by, so...didn't come out so good, so, I'll re-create my thoughts here.

Well, Borders is okay, but...Amazon is cheaper.

And I don't have to put up with the mix of stop-and-start, and Road Warrior traffic, like I do getting into fucking Portland.

And I don't have to put up with latte sucking yuppies.

So....what's the downside of Amazon, and the upside of Borders exactly?

Eh, maybe if I had an entourage of homies to hang with like "Friends"....

*Shrug*

So, Borders pretty much drove out Bookland.
I liked Bookland.
Little cozier, clerks were more familiar, just was a little nicer.

But, they're dead now.

And, they bought out the Waldenbooks inside the mall, and then that went under, so, that stands husked out with one of those "in development", boxes wrapped around it.

Probably gonna be another fucking clothing store.

That's all that's left in the mall.
Clothes, and cellphones, and cell phone accessories.
And DVDs, but that's something else that's cheaper at Amazon.

If Sharon hadn't turned me on to Lindt chocolates, I wouldn't have had any reason to go there at all today.

Hmm, shoulda took some pics wandering the corridors of the mall.
Dammit.
Well, fuck it, I ain't going back.

...shit, I would like a bag of those cream and raspberry jelly filled Lindts...okay, fuck, I'll have to go back again...they're so fuckin' good....

Dammit...

You win this round, Portland....

Okay, couple more shots...

This is from the sidewalk along Macey's heading back to Borders.
The red arrow shows where the mini-mall is that used to have Bookland.

Okay, coming around the corner, better view....

...there's the mini-mall across the street.

Red arrow is right where Bookland was.

I miss you, Bookland....so....damned...much....*grinds teeth*....*chokes back angry tears*....

Blue arrow is fuckin' Mcdonalds.
They're everywhere.
Like cancer in a colon.

Green arrow is where Zayre's used to be.
Pretty much a K-Mart knockoff.
Then the whole chain got bought out, and became Ames.
Then the whole Ames chain went under, and...now they're a fuckin' sporting goods store.

I dunno, Zayre's was kinda trashy, but...had a childhood connection to it, y'know?

Everything familiar goes away......*sigh*

Well....there's Newberry comics, and that's a pretty decent geek hangout...but...I feel too old.
Everyone there's teenagers.

Nowhere to go.
Nowhere to goddamned go.

If you're not into sports bars, and/or dance clubs, you're fucked.
Y'know?

Just nowhere to fucking go.

Whelp, that's about all of Portland I could stand.

So, heading back....

...okay, so once one gets past all the traffic lights that suck 10 minutes out of your life, and the maniacs, and the oblivious stooges on cell phones drifting either toward you, or a guard rail, then you're the fuck out of Portland, and back to the boonies, but it isn't quite over yet.

You've got this fucking intersection.

Okay, gotta get out the John Madden pen again.....

Okay, red arrow there, see that fucking lane?
That's for trailer trucks to corner.
You shitty little sedans, that's not for you.
It's definitely not there for you to pass on the outside, you fucking little weasel-faced shit-burgers.

The blue arrow is where these little shits pass on the outside.

And people keep letting them in....

STOP LETTING THEM IN!!
DON"T YOU DO IT!!
DON'T YOU DO IT!!!
WHY ARE YOU LETTING THAT FUCKER IN!!!???
FUCKER, FUCKER, FUCKEEERRRR!!!!!

STOPPIT, STOPPIT, STOP, STOP, STOP, STOOOOPP!!!!!!

OOOOHHHHH!!!!!!!!

...ahem....

Green arrow is where the lanes start to pinch off into one lane.

This is WHY you shouldn't let the fuckers pass on the outside.

The purple arrow is where you should not let them in, and where they should be forced into crashing into the woods, and bursting into flames.

Huge towers of cleansing flame.

But no,...they keep...being let...IN!!!!

*Grinds teeth*...ohh....ohh...ohhh-ho-ho-hooooo.....

*Sigh*

It's a long fucking light too, so you get to be stuck there for 70 seconds pouring hate brainwaves at the fucker in the next lane, knowing what's going to happen.....

Anyway, once one makes it past that shit....

......things get fairly relaxing and pastoral again.

That's King's Farm.
Little farmer's market.
Got some funeral flowers for Gram last time I was there.
Good place for Halloween pumpkins and "cidah", too.

Eh, gimme a break, I couldn't get it all in one shot going by at 45 miles an hour.

Across the street is this church.

Something for my RD.net peeps to shake their fists at.
Heehee.
Couldn't read the sign.
Most times it's harmless, and insipid.
Once in a blue moon, it's a howler.

Well, I had my MP3 player blaring through the car stereo, and I had my chocolates awaiting my tummy, so, I didn't need the entertainment this time.

Oh yeah, right up ahead here is where I went off the road, and plunged into a snowbank.

Riiiight....

...here!!!

Pretty dramatic view through the windshield.
Just like the accidents you see in movies.
Pretty cool.

Oh yeah, here's what's left of Hanson's Market.

Kinda like King's.

Outta business now.

Shit, he had good stuff too.
I shoulda went there more.
Not that I woulda single-handedly saved it, but...y'know...just shoulda...

And yeah, here's this great field on the way home.
The camera doesn't do it justice at all.
The right weather, the right time of day, some nice thick mashed-potato clouds in the sky, it's fucking gorgeous to drive past.

Wide open space, no corners, no lights, and somehow over the years, people have managed to have every sort of accident along this road.

People are fucking dumb.
People are just fucking dumb.

Well...that's everything for today, thanks for taking this little ride with me.
;)

Aww, shit, I shoulda got one of the Smiling Church up at the corner!

A film crew some years ago took pictures, and made measurements, and made an exact replica for Stephen King's "The Storm Of The Century".

The movie sucked, I fucking hated it, but...that's still pretty cool, y'know?

Also, there's a memorial cross thingy for some guy who splatted himself on his motorcycle at that corner.
...man, that's some morbid medieval shit.

Memorializing the splat spot?

Eh, I'll get a picture of that next time.

So much I missed.

But, that's what other blog entries are for.

Location blogging #1.

Whelp, here we go.....

Well, I'm now the proud owner of one of these little beauties.

Now I can surreptitiously photo/video scenes, and do mobile blogging.

Hopefully, these will escalate to video ones.
But, for this one at least, I felt a bit nutty talking into my pocket, so I cropped out photos, and and am doing this first one text style.
Easing into it, see...;)

Okay, this corner here?
Had an incident that sticks out in my memory.
I was about, oh...15, 16, it's a bit fuzzy now.
Okay, see up near the upper left corner, right side of the street, that little brown stick?
That's a phone pole.
I was taking a walk, and was right about there, when a fucking pickup truck rolls by, and the back is full of kids, ranging from about oh, 12 to 13 it looked.

They were hooting, and making incoherent remarks, but that tone of voice, it couldn't have been good.

On what amounted to muscle-memory reflex action, I lazily flipped the bird.

We all do it, don't we?
Someone's being a yahoo, we flip 'em off.
Least I do.
A necessary form of release.

Anyway, they drove on, I kept walking, didn't even think about it.

So I get about oh...coming toward you, still along the right side of the road, about where that tree shadow ends.

Fucking truck comes back, kids are gone, and it's clearly the dad of those kids come to bawl me out, and be a redneck bully.

Gives me a barking lecture, says the kids are back home crying, and do I feel sorry for myself, and that I'd better watch myself, and yadda yadda yadda...

And I'm both worried that this yahoo is gonna jump out of the truck and take a swing or something, but at the same time, I'm trying not to laugh hysterically at the notion of 12-13 year old kids CRYING over having seen THE FINGER.

CRYING!!!!!

Over THE FINGER!!!!!

THE FINGER!!!!

I think also a birthday party was involved, and I had somehow utterly destroyed that as well.

So, I act all "golly gee whiz, Mister Cleaver", until this idiot shuts up, and goes away, and then I snuck another bird as he drives off in self-righteous satisfaction.

Thug.

People are fucking lame.

People are fucking dumb.

People are fucking awful.

You're just trying to get down the fucking street, trying to exist, and people brumble and gurgle into frame with their noise, and bullshit, and chest thumping.

Anyway, I wonder how those kids turned out.

Riding stripper poles, dealing drugs, who fucking knows?

If a meaningless raised digit could scar 'em, one really wonders.
The mind fucking reels.

And if they were that innocent and precious, how did they know what the fucking finger meant?

*Head shake*

Redneck bullshit, the whole thing.
Just a thug being a thug, with an embarrassing bullshit story on top.

I bet someone somewhere reading this thinks that animal's reactions were not only justified, but so too would violence.

Fuck you.
You're another dumb ape for the pile.
Finger.

Hate this town.
Gotta get out of here.
Memories like these poke me with a stick.

Here, let's look at something prettier.

I like this stretch of road.
It's desolate, not much traffic.
Nothing that annoyed me ever happened here.
It's why I like to take walks on it.

One wouldn't think one would be able to feel the world closing in with a wide open vista like that.
Somehow, I manage it.

*Grim chuckle*

So, that's location shoot one.

In upcoming ones, I'll go out of my range of comfort in a radius.

Catalog the tableau of American defeat I find around me.
Maybe some beauty too.
It'll be my little "quest for hope", tour.
:)
