James Gunn keeps saying in interviews he wants his Superman to be more optimistic than the Snyder one. I mean, he never utters Snyder's name, much less bashes them, but that's pretty easy to pick up.
You don't do a happy Superman and have him co-exist with The Authority, unless they're the baddies.
If the Authority are meant to be goodies, then you've basically got Snyder-verse all over gain.
Snyder's Justice League are Watchmen-ified.
Take Watchmen-ified JL to its conclusion, you get The Authority.
Assuming I'm right; pitting Supes against the Authority is Gunn's way of having Boy Scout Superman push back against Snyder in a sneaky wink-wink way that hardcore geeks will grasp right off, and casual moviegoers will pick up on subliminally.
BUT! A Supes vs Authority movie already exists.
The animated "Superman vs The Elite".
Review in link, graphic up top.
The Elite being parody versions of The Authority.
Clearly (IMO) Gunn is like "fuck parody versions; let's have it be the actual Authority".
Here's what I said about The Authority way the fuck back in 2012.
The Authority...the gist I get...is..the last couple issues of Alan Moore's Miracleman, where he turns the world into a utopia as a benevolent but still totalitarian dictator, but it's a whole Justice League style team that does it, and dragged out, and given a creepy violent edge of...well, the Bush Administration.
If I'm right on that....yuck.
Could be interesting though...
Anyway, The Authority inspired a retaliatory salvo in the form of Action Comics #775 "What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, And The American Way?", which has been adapted into the animated film "Superman vs. The Elite", coming this July.
So..that'll be interesting.
See? Archiving this shit pays off!
At least, I hope that's where he's going with it.
Why reboot away the Snyder-verse only to have the Gunn-verse be as dark or darker?
Gunn does do light and dark movies; Guardians 1-2, vs Suicide Squad 2, and Guardians 3.
I'm inclined to think his Superman will lean more towards the Guardians 1 side.
Again, I think that's where he's going, and I hope that's where he's going.
