Previously...
I couldn't avoid doing this one without deluding myself, or going into a vortex of raw denial.
The closer Gunn-verse gets, the less enthused I am.
I hope this gut feeling is wrong.
It just seems so far, what with "Peacekeeper" being the sole survivor carrying over from Snyder-verse, and "Creature Commandos" seemingly being even more Suicide Squad, how exactly is this really going to be so different from Snyder-verse?
Gunn-verse Superman is supposedly going to be the pure-hearted goody-two-shoes Superman he's supposed to be.
But, if you're gonna surround him with hard-PG-13 rated cynical scumbags in his own movie, and give those scumbags R rated movies, how does Supes not end up looking like a parody like "The Brady Bunch Movie"?
Supergirl is even supposed to be lethal.
Doesn't that just make her Bolty from "Super"?
DC has its Bolty. She's Harley Quinn.
Keep the Suicide Squad-y shit over in the dark Gotham City corner of DC.
You don't have to fuck up Supergirl.
And then, you've got "The Authority" going to be part of this DCU.
"The Authority" are a bunch of Homelanders.
Like I said here, I hope he's setting them up as baddies, and not goodies, and Superman has to take them down like "Superman vs The Elite".
If not...damn, this is gonna suck.
If Authority are goodies, it's just more fascist-scented crap.
If they're baddies, why are they getting their own movie?
You've got three ways you can go with what Gunn seems to be setting up.
Make Superman pure, and have him restore pure good to his universe.
Or, as close as he can get. Like Christopher Reeve Superman.
Make Superman pure, but have him be a joke, like "Brady Bunch Movie".
Make Superman start pure, but get corrupted.
Like "Super".
Which is a James Gunn joint, which is why I worry.
We have R rated corrupted Superman.
He's Hugo Danner.
Hugo's in public domain; DC and Marvel can both use him.
Revive Hugo. Leave Kal-El alone.
It all hinges on Superman 2025.
I'll go see it, but if I don't like what I see philosophically, I'll let y'all know it, and I'm tapping out on the DC movies.
I'm not gonna sit through another damned decade of disjointed mess like the Snyder-verse.
Hey, I could be wrong, and Gunn's Superman will be Christopher Reeve take 2, and his Batman could be Adam West take 2, and all will be well in DC-land.
But, his obsession with the Suicide Squad flavor, and his affinity for The Authority, and lethal-Supergirl kinda dashes my hopes.
Layer on the disaster Joker 2 just was, and the Development Hell that The Batman 2 is stuck in, and yeah...it doesn't seem like Warners has learned anything.
And I don't see Gunn steering them away from their bad choices.
With what's trickling out, I'm not given cause for optimism.
Like I said at the start, I hope the Hell I'm wrong.
If I'm even 10% right, it's bad news.
I hate to be the fly in the ointment.
But I can't be silent either.
Hope I'm wrong. I'd dearly love to be wrong.
Stay tuned!
Anyway, retro-linking this to "Prelude to the DC Gunn-verse relaunch".
