They're calling it a "spinoff" whatever that means.

ED2013 and ED:Rise didn't have Ash, but had Necronomicons.

Seem spinoff-y enough to me already.

Sebastien Vanicek, a guy I never heard of, is directing.

But...I never heard of Fede Alvarez before ED2013, and he ended up doing the 4th Dragon Tattoo movie, and "Don't Breathe" is already a household name....

EDIT- And oh yeah! He's got Alien 7 AKA "Alien Romulus" coming out!
