Martyrs (2008)
Basic plot: Two girls are kidnapped and tortured by a vast secret cult that believes torture brings you to religious ecstasy; like what happened to Jesus and the other historical martyrs, and that if you can dish out enough agony, you literally get the victim close to God, and can reveal the secrets of the universe.
I hated this one.
I don't want to go into the spoiler detail that I went into on Facebook, but...suffice it to say, it's torture porn, but with a pretentious philosophy that doesn't add up in the logic department.
None of what the bad guys do makes logical sense, even accounting for that they're maniacs.
Pissed me off.
Give it a miss.
So, here's my Facebook spoilers...
Eh, the violence was done well, but...my analytical side kept asking things like "how does this conspiracy have so many members?
How do you let that sort of thing out of the bag to potential recruits?
It's not like you can advertise on Craigslist. Where did they get the workforce to build this underground torture chamber? Where did they get the raw materials without raising questions? Where did they get this custom dungeon equipment?
All of this requires more and more people you have to let in on the conspiracy, and more potential people to blab. Wouldn't they have to kill all those people to shut them up?
Wouldn't all those disappearing people raise suspicion?
And...do none of these morons read science articles? This whole near-death load of bullshit can be replicated with brain stimulation. They've known about it since...well, when their dumb conspiracy would have started, around the 90's.
No one brought this up? They're aping science, why turn around and reject it?
Okay, religious morons, I know, but still...", and so forth.
After seeing how deep the rabbit hole goes on Jeffrey Epstein, and seeing what chickenshit boot-licking capitulators Republicans are to Trump, and finding out how brazenly depraved almost the whole goddamned billionaire class are, and very recently watching an unsettling documentary on the Children Of God cult, yeah, this movie cult could totally fucking exist.
And as for the pseudo-science, again, look at real life.
Look at RFK Jr, and how many think his quackery is brilliant.
I take it all fucking back.
Oh, it WOULD leak out to the world eventually though.
But it wouldn't matter.
The Children Of God shit got out, and no one fucking did anything.
Nothing is currently being done about the Epstein files, and Ghislaine Maxwell is all raring to go for her fucking pardon.
I still think its an icky movie that bums me out, but now it bums be out because it could indeed happen.
