Among the books I inherited from Ma were everything Tolkien but Hobbit.
Think she gave Hobbit to one of the cousins when they were little.

Ugh, that's what MY mom's copy looked exactly like, the one I read.
I don't really remember "The Hobbit" too well. If anything, I remember the crummy little animated movie more because my mom had the VHS tape.
My mom had some nice stuff on VHS, lots of obscure and forgotten 70s-80s stuff--Terry "Crumb" Zwigoff's "Louie Bluie," the VHS version of the old 80s "Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" miniseries, and...ugh, "Pretty Baby." Yeah I told her to be wary of ever selling that one to anybody, perv alert. (She didn't remember that Brooke Shields did nude scenes in the film.)
My mother read it to me when I was little, and all I remember is I really only paid hard attention and locked in once Gollum showed up. Like you, I retained the movie more.
